PootlrHost vs Outdore: campsite booking software compared

Outdore and PootlrHost compared for UK campsites: what a 5-pitch CL and a 20-pitch site pay, Pitchup, websites, pitch maps and commission.

Updated . Outdore’s details checked

Outdore and PootlrHost are close: both are UK booking systems built for campsites, both let guests choose their pitch on a map, and both have a plan at £1 a booking. The main differences are how they charge as you grow, what the website includes, how they connect to Pitchup, and that Outdore is also a guest booking app that charges commission on the bookings it sends you.

Where Outdore is the better choice

  • You want an app from the App Store. Outdore has iOS and Android apps for managing bookings. PootlrHost runs in your phone’s browser, and can be added to your home screen.
  • You want new guests from a booking app. Every Outdore site is listed on the Outdore app, which brings bookings at 10% commission, including VAT. PootlrHost doesn’t list you anywhere: for that, keep Pitchup or Hipcamp alongside it.
  • Your guests belong to other clubs. Outdore asks for membership numbers from more clubs, including the Freedom, Greener and Wanderlust clubs.
  • You run a network of club sites, or a rally site. Outdore has an Enterprise plan for club networks, groups of sites and event or rally sites.
  • Card fees. Outdore lets you add Stripe’s fees to an optional guest booking fee. On PootlrHost, card fees come out of the payment and guests never pay them.
  • Track record. Outdore says it’s trusted by more than 160 UK campsites.

Where PootlrHost is the better choice

  • A small site, with no subscription. Outdore’s pricing page shows its £1-a-booking Starter plan as “available for 16+ pitches/units”, so a smaller site may need Standard, at £20 or £30 a month plus £1 a pitch. On PootlrHost, every site can pay £1 a booking, and bookings you add yourself, import or bring in from other booking sites are free.
  • A bigger site. Pro has no booking fee and no charge per pitch: £25 a month (or £225 for a year paid upfront). A 20-pitch site would pay £500 a year on Outdore Starter (nothing if guests pay its fees), or £600 on Standard.
  • Pitchup. PootlrHost connects with your Pitchup API key. Pitchup bookings come in with the guest’s details within a couple of minutes, and Pitchup is told straight away when a night is booked in PootlrHost, and within about 15 minutes when one is booked on another site. Outdore links Pitchup by calendar link, so Pitchup only learns about a night sold elsewhere when it next reads that calendar.
  • A full website. PootlrHost builds a website with pages for each pitch type, your gallery, how to find you and your questions, on your own domain if you have one. Outdore’s free website is a single page and can’t use your own domain.
  • No commission at all. PootlrHost has no guest app or listing that takes a cut.
  • Everything on every plan. PootlrHost holds nothing back for a dearer plan, apart from taking the small “Bookings by PootlrHost” line off what guests see: discounts, booking calendars on your own website, staff logins and every booking site link are on both plans. Outdore keeps several of these for Standard.

What it costs, worked through

A 5-pitch CL taking 150 bookings a year at £20:

  • PootlrHost: 150 × £1 = £150 a year. Pass the £1 on to guests as a service fee, and it costs you nothing.
  • Outdore Standard, at the club-site rate: (£20 + 5 × £1) × 12 = £300 a year.
  • Outdore Starter would be 150 × £1 = £150, or nothing if guests pay the fees, if a 5-pitch site can use it.

A 20-pitch campsite taking 500 bookings a year at £60:

  • PootlrHost Pro: £25 × 12 = £300 a year (or £225 for a year paid upfront). On Pay As You Go it would be 500 × £1 = £500.
  • Outdore Starter: 500 × £1 = £500 a year, or nothing if guests pay the fees.
  • Outdore Standard: (£30 + 20 × £1) × 12 = £600 a year.

Card fees are on top with both, at about the same Stripe rate. Outdore’s pricing page doesn’t mention VAT; its price comparison suggests its figures include it.

Moving from Outdore to PootlrHost

  • Download your bookings from Outdore (it exports them to Excel), save them as a CSV file and import them into PootlrHost. You check every row before anything goes in.
  • Build your new website as a draft, and keep taking bookings on Outdore until it’s ready.
  • If you have a website of your own, send its old addresses to the new pages, so links and search results still work.
  • Email guests with stays to come to say where their booking now lives.

Switching to PootlrHost goes through each step.

For a 5-pitch CL, yes: £150 a year on PootlrHost, or nothing if guests pay the £1, against £300 on Outdore Standard at the club-site rate, since Outdore’s pricing page shows its £1-a-booking Starter plan as “available for 16+ pitches/units”.
